I’m sure all of you know about AI. Image generators like Dall-E are making life-like paintings with simple prompts of five to ten words. Text generators like ChatGPT have the ability to make songs, books, and even snippets of screenplays in the blink of an eye. The two of them are both free and easy to use. There are many other types of AI, but the most common are image and text generators. Artificial intelligence is a very controversial subject. It has grown from just an idea in movies like Terminator, to a real, living thing that is not just an idea anymore. The history of AI is a strange one, so why don’t we take a look?
The idea of AI has only really been a thing for around one hundred years. Movies like The Wizard of Oz or Star Wars were the first ideas of Artificial Intelligence being used. It’s funny to think that the idea of AI has gone from an expensive robot to a free computer service. ChatGPT is a phenomenon of a website (even in 2024), but imagine how crazy AI was to people in the 80’s. The first ever working Artificial Intelligence was made by Alfred Whitehead and Bertrand Russell in 1956, and it was called Logic Theorist. Logic Theorist’s goal was to “Prove theorems in symbolic logic”. This means using rules to show that a certain statement is true or false. It was generally just an early Google that always had what you were looking for. It wasn’t too far off from ChatGPT, but it wasn’t widely available for many obvious reasons. I mean, it was 1956. Not everyone had a computer like we do now.
The first example of AI image generation was DALL-E, a service owned by OpenAI who also owns ChatGPT. DALL-E is known for making amazing images in 10-15 seconds, but sometimes there are some mishaps. They can’t make proper text, or sometimes they might make the face look off. Sometimes, they have less (or more) body parts, and sometimes they just don’t make what you tell them to.
This image is what you get when you type: “Horse-riding astronaut digital art saying: ‘Wow! I love riding horses in space!’” As you can see, this is not what I asked for. While they got the horse-riding astronaut in space, where is the text? What does “Wose!” mean? There are many mistakes in this photo, as I’m sure you can see. The horse has five feet with three of them at the back, the astronaut’s helmet is bulging out of his head, and he’s saying a word that doesn’t exist. I don’t think we have to be worried about a war with robots just yet. But there is a type of robot that’s capabilities are phenomenal.
ChatGPT was the first main AI chatbot that had a full mind of its own. It was released by OpenAI in November of 2022. You can use ChatGPT for just about anything. You can write movies, create books, and it can even do your work for you. A quick warning here: never use ChatGPT for your work. While it does get things right, there are serious consequences for using it in school. You can be kicked out of your school or severely punished. The following paragraph is written by ChatGPT with the prompt being “Create a short paragraph about a little girl named Jane and her favourite pet cat”.
“Jane was a spirited little girl with a heart full of curiosity and a love for adventure. Her constant companion through every escapade was her beloved pet cat, Whiskers. Whiskers was a fluffy ball of fur with mischievous green eyes that sparkled in the sunlight. Together, they explored the nooks and crannies of their neighborhood, chasing butterflies, climbing trees, and unraveling mysteries hidden in the tall grass. Jane and Whiskers shared a special bond that went beyond words, a silent understanding that made each day an unforgettable adventure filled with joy and laughter.”
That story seems to be written by a professional writer. ChatGPT is scary for some people. A robot that is free to use for everyone, that can create life-like emails and stories in the span of a couple of seconds. Some people are worried for the future of Hollywood and story writing businesses because people could be using ChatGPT to write their scripts and stories for them. Despite all the downsides and dangerous capabilities of AI chatbots, it is vital for our future and the advancement of human beings. AI has impacted humans for the better in most ways, but we always have to be careful when using websites that do things for us.
In conclusion, although artificial intelligence has impacted our world in profound ways, we still need to use our common sense to navigate life with it. We should always be careful of what we’re putting on the internet, and be cautious about how we use AI in school.
