Remember that article from last year called “Popular songs at VTT”? Well I’ve got an update. After going around the school and interviewing some students, here is what I found. Like last year, the most popular artist is Taylor Swift. However, the variety of songs is very wide. Each person who chose Taylor Swift chose a different song. The songs they chose were Long Live, Cruel Summer, Clean, Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me, Florida, and I Can Do It With a Broken Heart. The last three songs come from the same album, The Tortured Poets Department which came out in April, 2024.
Up next, in second place was Gracie Abrams. Gracie is a pretty new artist and has grown in popularity in the past few years. Out of the students I interviewed, three of them chose her. They all chose the same song, That’s So True which shows that it is a pretty popular song. Gracie also has a good connection with Taylor Swift. She has performed multiple times at the Eras Tour and has written a few songs with her.
In third place is P!NK. P!NK was selected by two students who love the artist P!NK. They chose the songs Trust Fall and Cover Me in Sunshine as their favourite songs. P!NK is one artist who, unlike others, has spoken out after the attacks of October 7th. After interviewing a few students, I sent out a form to grades 5-7. I got a lot of responses but they weren’t surprising. From the form, almost everyone chose ‘other’, which shows that everyone has different opinions. Combined with the interviews Taylor Swift came in first. They chose songs like Daylight, Bejeweled, Long Live, Love Story, and Florida. Fun fact, each of these songs are from different albums. Taylor recently finished her two year world tour, The Eras Tour and has gained a lot of popularity since the start of this tour, especially at VTT.
Next up in second place was Sabrina Carpenter. She is a pretty new artist who gained fame after releasing her song ‘Espresso’. She is currently on a world tour called the Short and Sweet tour, named after her most recent album, Short and Sweet. She also starred in multiple Disney and Netflix movies like Tall Girl. Her new album is a big hit and is really popular right now.
In third place are P!NK, Olivia Rodrigo, and Gracie Abrams. These three artists were each chosen by three people. Like Sabrina Carpenter, Olivia Rodrigo is also currently on her world tour, the GUTS Tour. Her albums SOUR and GUTS are currently really popular and she is listed as #67 best singer in the world. Yes, it isn’t in the top 10 but it is still really good. The last artist in third place is Gracie Abrams. Gracie is also a pretty new artist who has gained popularity through her music, but also through Taylor Swift. She has been the opener for multiple Eras Tour shows and has also written songs with Taylor.
Fourth place is also a tie. This time, it is a tie between Noah Kahan, Billie Eilish, Eminem, and KSI. KSI is known for his song, ‘Thick of It’ which was chosen by two different students. Like the other artists, Noah Kahan was also chosen by two students. They chose two different songs unlike the students that chose KSI. They chose ‘Orange Juice’ and ‘Stick Season’. Next is Billie Eilish. Billie Eilish has been in the music industry for a while now. She is the #5 best singer in the world on Spotify and her songs ‘Birds of a Feather’ and ‘What Was I Made For’ have been really popular throughout social media. Lastly, is Eminem. His song ‘The Real Slim Shady’ is a big hit and is popular in the grade three classes. He is rated as the #14 best singer in the world on Spotify.
The rest of the artists chosen were a wide variety. These students each chose a different artist. These artists are SZA, yourboysponge, Mcap Steve, YOASOBI, Polo G, Bruno Mars, Travis Scott, Doja Cat, Tyler the Creator, Ava Max, and Playboi Carti. This shows that our school has a big variety of students who like different artists.
VTT’s students are very unique when it comes to their music tastes. As shown above, Taylor Swift is the most popular and the fan favourite at VTT and the runner-ups are Sabrina Carpenter, P!NK, Olivia Rodrigo, and Gracie Abrams. I think VTT has great music tastes whether they like Taylor Swift, Noah Kahan, or any other artist. In conclusion, I think VTT has students with great music tastes and the artists they chose are some of the best in the world.
