Interview with Laura

What questions would you ask a director to ensure you understand their vision?

Laura: The way that Keri works is that she allows people to have a vision of their own, and then she puts all the ideas together to form them into a big idea.

How do you design in order to meet tight deadlines?

Laura: I start thinking about the play well before anything officially starts and then try to get as much together before it officially starts like materials. Then I spend every day at school working.

How are you feeling about this year’s costumes?

Laura: Very, very excited because I already love this musical and it will be thrilling to see the clothes that I have put together make the actors come to life.

Blake: What are the most important aspects to research when working on a period piece?

Laura: The period of time, where it is set, and historical time and place. That will tell you a lot about what the costumes need to look like.

Blake: What was your favorite costume you have ever designed?

Laura: That would have been Pharaoh from Joseph.

What is your favorite part about costume designing?

Laura: Using my imagination and seeing how creative I can get.

What type of productions have you designed costumes for?

Laura: I have designed costumes for Joseph, Seussical, and Annie. I have no history designing this before.

How do you come up with the costumes?

Laura: The first thing I do is imagine each character and the period of time that they are supposed to be living in. What colours might they have been drawn to.

Why do you design costumes?

Laura: I design costumes because I love interacting with all the people in the school, and it’s very fun to be creative with all the mediums and with all the different textures.

How did you begin to enjoy designing costumes?

Laura: Keri and I have known each other for a long time. I had never designed costumes before, but Keri said “do you want to design costumes for Joseph?” and I thought “why don’t I design costumes?”
