Trump Tariffs

Back in February, Donald Trump announced that he would be placing tariffs on Canada and Mexico. The supposed reason for these tariffs was because of illegal immigrants and illicit substances (drugs) flowing from Canada and Mexico to the US.

Canada vowed to tighten border security to stop this, as did Mexico. Despite this, Trump only postponed the tariffs for a month, before they went into effect. It has since been discovered the reasons for the tariffs were fake and Canada believes it is only part of a plan to weaken and then annex Canada.

Mexico has pledged to fight to the end with Canada. And Europe, also abandoned by Trump, is working to build trade relationships with Canada and Mexico. Canada is fighting back by also putting tariffs on Canadian baked goods. Now how will Americans eat their Pancakes? They need maple syrup, but with the new cost of it they might start a protest.

The tariffs are heavy hitting, with 25% tariffs on steel and aluminium. Along with the 25% tariff for all Canadian goods, that means that the tariff for steel and aluminium will rise to 50%.. And that’s not even mentioning that the majority of aluminium the US has, a critical metal for a lot of things, comes from Canada! The tariff is only 10% on goods for energy as the energy that Canada exports to the US is critical in running the northern states, and even some of the southern ones!

Why did these tariffs start?

These tariffs started from The US is because the US wants Canada to be the 51st state. Obviously, Canada said no. Also, if Canada would say yes, then the US would have to change their flag to 51 stars. It has been 7 years since the last tariffs were imposed by the United States on Canada. Did you know that in 2018, Donald Trump was the president and now in 2025 he became the president again? I think that the tariffs are too hard for the Canadian government. For example, the US tariffs are going really hard.

Grocery stores have been labeling products if they were made in Canada. The product will have a sticker with a maple leaf on it and say something like “Proudly made Canadian.” So now, most people have switched to only Canadian made food!

And now, we get to car parts. An average car part crosses the US-Canada border six times in the process of making it to use in a car! There will be a 25% tariff every time that car part crosses the border. That will make cars cost an extra five thousand dollars,or even more than that!

To conclude, I think Canada should stand up, build trade relationships with Europe and Mexico, and fight back against Trump!
